I am currently a third year student studying for a bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying at the University of Reading. Over the summer of 2012 I had a placement in Nairobi, Kenya which was very exciting and turned out to be fruitful.

The working environment was excellent and promoted healthy learning as the partners and senior colleagues were always ready to train the interns by giving work and answering any queries. In my time at the company I performed tasks like ‘taking-off’, and prepared interim valuations. I also had the opportunity to assist tender openings, site meetings, and site inspections. I made extensive use of AutoCAD Architecture at my time at the company and also got acquainted with specialised software for Quantity Surveying work.

The difference I found in the Kenyan workplace from where I have worked previously is that business relations mean a lot to the people. The experience gained will certainly play a key role in developing myself and my career as a Graduate Cost Consultant at EC Harris
