Graduate Cost Manager at AECOM

I am currently in my 3rd year of studying a Bachelor of Science in Quantity Surveying at the University of Reading.

I was lucky enough to secure a place at Davis Langdon’s Oxford office for the entirety of the summer. I managed to obtain the placement by emailing the director of this company. I also emailed a number of other companies just in case. Within days, I was asked to go in for an interview to discuss the possibility of a work placement. Davis Langdon is the UK’s leading Cost Consultant, they employ over 3000 people in more than 75 offices globally. They have many interesting past projects including the Tate Modern Extension, Eden Project and The Shard. I felt that they could provide the most exciting and beneficial opportunity for me.

The office specialises in Healthcare and Science & Innovation which is a construction sector that is particularly appealing to me. A typical day would include taking off quantities from drawings sent from the Architects and putting these into the CATO Cost Consultant’s software. With reference to Spon’s and NRM1 & 2 I was then able to complete cost plan estimates.

By covering these tasks, I developed many useful skills which have assisted me with my Quantity Surveying 3rd year modules. Not only this, it has given me a head start over many other construction students for when I enrol onto a graduate programme next year.

My advice to any young professional willing to pursue a career in the Construction Industry is to obtain a work placement similar to this. I found it very beneficial in helping me discover how I wanted to pursue my future in the industry. In addition, I have also become connected to numerous Healthcare Infrastructure professionals who are very willing to assist me with my upcoming Dissertation.
